A CALL TO COURAGE—(2 Timothy 1:6-12)

** The books of 1 & 2 Timothy are called the pastoral epistles They are part of the Post Acts period letters of
Paul. He was soon beheaded after these writings.
** The Apostle Paul wrote these 2 letters to Timothy, his son in the faith, whom he left at Ephesus to oversee the
the work there.
** The theme of 2 Timothy may be taken from (2:3), “A good soldier of Christ. In (Vs. 8-12) Paul is calling on
Timothy to be a good soldier and courageous.
** Let’s entitle the message, “A Call To Courageous”.

Many Christians today, they profess to love the Lord and not ashamed of of his testimony, but yet, when they get into a little bit of persecution, they want to cower, instead of being strong in Christ. I myself, have been included in this. Even the Apostle Peter was like this, when he cussed and denied Jesus 3 times and the cock crew (Matthew 26:31-35); (Matthew 26:59-65) Notice that Peter is DENYING Scripture here.

I: STIR UP THE GIFT OF GOD THAT IS IN YOU— (2 Timothy 1:6)

A: Here Timothy is reminded to STIR UP the gift of God that is in him. In other words, he is saying, USE IT, and do not be afraid to.

B: This gift that the Apostle Paul was talking about could have been any one of the gifts that are listed in
(1 Cor. 12) or (Romans 12:5-8) These gifts are in 2 categories. They are as follows:

SIGN GIFTS: These are not in use today. They ceased when the Bible was completed somewhere around 95 A.D

a: Apostleship
b. Prophecy
Miracles
Healing
e. Discerning of spirits
f. Word of wisdom
g. Word of Knowledge
h. Tongues
I Interpretation of tongues

STATIONARY GIFTS: These are still in use today.

a. Teaching
b. Helps (ministering)
Administration
Evangelism
e. Pastor / Teacher
f. Exhortation
g. Giving
h. Showing of mercy
Faith

C. Do not be afraid to use the gift or gifts that God has given to you. Why? It is because we have the spirit of POWER. (Proverbs 28:1) Where we lack in this power, we are to ask for prayer just like Paul did in
(Ephes. 6:18-19)

We also have the spirit of LOVE: We can love God and his word, even though there are others who do not and will attack God’s word and us, yell at us, spit in our faces, mock us, ridicule us, and make fun of us. We can love the lost, because we know their condition and we can love heavenly things, by putting our affection on thing above.

E. We also have a SOUND MIND. We have this sound mind because we have the true, infallible, without error, preserved and inspired word of God, the King James Bible. Those who came up with and use the PERversions of God’s word, their sound minds that God gave them left them. The PERversions are the product of losing that SOUND MIND.

I: BE NOT ASHAMED OF THE TESIMONY OF THE LORD–(2 Timothy 1:8)

ASHAMED- Confused by a consciencness of guilt or inferiority, by the mortification of pride by failure or
disappointment.

A: The Apostle Paul was not ashamed– (Romans 1:16) (2Timothy 1:12)
The Apostle Paul was beaten, stoned and left for dead, shipwrecked, but look at what he says in
(Acts 20:22-24)

B. Those who believe on Christ should not be shall not be ashamed. (Romans 10:11)
If you believe Christ and his word, take a stand for it!! What will that do to the testimony of
of Christ and your testimony as a Christian? Because of your stand, that may be all that it will
take for someone to see that Christ is for real and not a joke, and they just might even put their
trust in him and his finished work for their salvation.

C: Be partakers of the afflictions of the gospel: (2 Timothy 1:8)
1. Many afflictions, trials, and persecutions will come our way, but don’t give up and quit.
(1 Peter 4:16) says, “Yet, If any man suffer as a Christian, let them not be ashamed; but let
him glorify God on this behalf.” (Acts 5:38-42)
Let’s you and I be like the Apostle Peter and the others and rejoice in afflictions and sufferings!! Let’s you and I be like the Apostle Paul, when he says, “But none of these things move me.” Why? So that we can finish our course with JOY!! Get rid of the animosity that you may have
toward someone that has hurt you, so that you can finish your course with joy!

II: BE COURAGEOUS CAUSE GOD CALLED US WITH AN HOLY CALLING (2 Timothy 1:9)

A: Let me say here, that ministry, no matter if it is being a piano player, singing in the choir, pastoring,
evangelist, secretary, whatever, it is NOT A JOB, It is a CALLING from the Almighty God!!

B: It is not because of our works that God calls us, He called us for his purpose and grace!!

C: We are saved to serve the Lord and do good works for him, not to sit on our backsides and do nothing!!
Will doing nothing, bring glory and honor to the Lord? I think not!!!! Get out there and pass out tracts
and tell others about Jesus!! If we do not, who will??

D: You say, God will never use me, I am to low on the totem poll! (1 Corinthians 1:26-31) (Acts 4:13)

III: BE COURAGEOUS BECAUSE CHRIST ABOLISHED DEATH– (2 Timothy 1:10)

A: Death is the end of physical life. It is also the spiritual death as well. Death is no respecter of persons. It
does not matter if we are young or old, in good health or bad. We all could be just one heart beat away
from death. Christ only abolished death for those that believe on him How did he do this?
(1 Corithians 15:1-4)

B: The doctrine of the resurrection is so very important, Why? Without it, Christ is not resurrected, those
who died for Christ, would have died in vain and our preaching would be in vain
(1 Corinthians 15:12-18)

C: Be steadfast in the faith, abounding in the work of the Lord, your labor will not be in vain!!

This is only for those who believe the gospel. Without putting your trust in Christ and his finished work, you will die in your sin and wake up in hell and then after the Great white Throne Judgment,
you will be cast into the lake of fire, which is the 2nd death!! (Revelation 20:11-15)

1V: BE COURAGEOUS BECUASE YOU KNOW WHOM YOU HAVE BELIEVED– (2 Timothy 1:12)

A: You know, many Christians will come into church, and they will sing, “Standing on the promises’, but yet,
outside the church building, away from the brethren sometimes, they get into trials, and they cry, “OH
WOE IS ME!! WHY AM I GOING THROUGH THIS? I HAVE DONE NOTHING TO DESERVE
THIS!!”

B: Can can not and will not ever lie nor break a promise!! One promise that he made is that he would never
leave us nor forsake us. He will be with us, not matter what happens in our lives!! Let’s be courageous
and stand on the promises of God!! Amen!!!
